Does Size Matter?

It’s the age-old question that everyone has thought about at least once in their adult life – does size really make a difference? Those with size in their favour will almost always say yes. Those with some challenges in that area will no doubt have their own well-rehearsed reply, typically about what you actually do with it is what matters most.

Drag your mind out of the gutter before we carry on. We are of course referring to the size of our distillery.

While most startups go for quaint, compact and dare we say almost garage sized setups, we went large. In absolutely every single aspect of the project. But size is one of those things that are quite difficult to visualise once you get past those every day object comparrisons. We all know roughly how big people are. We can all imagine the size of a car, a truck or a house even. But everything beyond that is largely a “meh”.

So we’ve decided to show the size of our distillery in things that can be visualised because we have some comparisons with things that you might have seen in in the real world.

So brace yourself for some comparisons, starting with Part One, some landmarks from the UK.

Size Matters – Wembley Stadium Football Pitch

Size Matters - Wembley Stadium

Officially opened on 9th March 2007, and costing £798 million to build, Wembley was designed with a capacity of 90’000 people. Considered to be the home of English football, Wembley Stadium holds the world record for having the most toilets in a venue with 2’618.

The pitch size as lined for Football and compliant with UEFA Stadium Category 4 standards is 105 meters long and 69 meters wide, giving a total area of 7’245 square meters.

Our distillery is 2.37 times bigger. So technically, (and subject to laying some grass and marking out some white lines) we could have 2 concurrent football matches with plenty of space between the two pitches for barbecues and tipples.

Size Matters – St Paul’s Cathedral

Size Matters - St Pauls Cathedral

Built between 1675 and 1710, St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most famous and recognisable sites of London. At 111 meters high it was the tallest building in London until 1963 and is the second largest church building in the UK after Liverpool Cathedral.

The cathedral was built to replace Old St Paul’s which was originally started in 1087 but was destroyed in The Great Fire of London in 1666.

With a footprint of over 8’705 square meters, it is still just barely half the size of our distillery.

Size Matters – London Bridge

The current bridge we refer to as London Bridge was opened in 1973, but there is history of there being a bridge at this point on the river Thames since Roman times.

The London Bridge of nursery rhymes refers to the Old London Bridge, which was at this site between 1209 and 1831, a time when the bridge had houses and shops on it, with some as high as 6 storeys. It served as one of London’s 5 main shopping areas with most shops being those of skilled craftspeople

The current London Bridge has a surface area of 7’972 square meters, so we could fit 2.16 of them in our distillery.

Size Matters – HMS Belfast

Size Matters - HMS Belfast

HMS Belfast is one of the UK’s Imperial War Museums that can be visited and explored. Originally commissioned in August in 1939, she has a length of 613 feet 6 inches (almost 187 meters) and a beam (width) or 63 feet 4 inches (19.2 meters). If our measurements are correct, we think we could fit more than 5 of these ships into our distillery.

Size Matters – London City Airport

Size Matters - City Airport

Just in case you’ve not seen enough to say “WOW” already, how about an airport?

To frame a context here, this isn’t just a village airport for hobbiest pilots. This is London City Airport and it handled over 5 million passengers in 2019. It manages more than 38 flights per hour during the busiest times of the day, most of which are international flights including a non-stop flight to New York’s JFK airport which has been operating since 2009.

Our distillery is big enough to house the entire terminal, all 18 gates, the London DLR train station that serves the airport, the drop off and pickup area and still have enough space left over for a badminton court and a five-a-side soccer pitch.
